Some history and background on Christian DiorChristian Dior was born in 1905 in Normandy, France. At an early age, he showed great interest in art, design, and fashion. Christian Dior decided to pursue an education in political science, although his creative abilities were acknowledged by his friends and family. Christian Dior spent several years in the French army. Christian Dior’s life began changing rapidly at the onset of the 2nd World War. Christian Dior was sent with the French resistance to the southern border of France. France quickly fell to the German army and Dior was detained in southern France. Dior returned to Paris after nearly a year.
Christian Dior was hired quickly upon his return to Paris by Lucien Lelong. Dior left LeLong’s design firm in 1946. Christian Dior found backing from Marcel Boussac, a wealthy textile industrialist, to open “the House of Dior”. In 1947, the House of Dior released its first major clothing collection for women. This collection was soon called “New Look”. This stunning line of clothing featured a full-length skirt, a cinched waist, rounded shoulders, and bold fabrics. In 1953, his designs were primarily on ballerina skirts and the classic suit. The focus in 1954 was on H-line dresses. In 1955, Christian Dior introduced his line of lipsticks.
